The House of Representatives passed House Resolution 224 on Thursday marking today (3/14) as National Pi Day. It may not be a national holiday, but its still pretty cool. Check out the full text of the resolution here. Celebrate by having a piece of pie today! Personally I'm having a slice of apple, a la mode.

Some interesting facts about :

• It is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
• It is irrational - that is that it cannot be written as a ratio of 2 integers.
• It is transcendental - that is that there is no finite polynomial with rational coefficients for which pi is a solution.
• An approximation truncated to 39 decimal places is sufficient to compute the circumference of any circle that fits in the observable universe to a precision comparable to the size of a hydrogen atom.
